As a specifically trained specialist, the MFA in urology exerts a significant influence on the processes in the urology department or specialist practice. They possess comprehensive knowledge of common clinical pictures in this medical specialty and can build on this knowledge to organize consultations efficiently.

This article introduces the training for MFAs in urology in Germany. It focuses on the core competencies of graduates in this specialized field and explains the differences from general MFA training.

What does an MFA do in urology?

A urology medical assistant assumes a wide range of tasks in the care of patients with urological conditions and in the diagnosis of urinary tract diseases. The various areas of responsibility include both administrative work and direct examinations. Ideally, thework of aurology medical assistant complements the physician’s duties, enabling seamless patient care.

Organizational tasks

The smooth running of a practice depends largely on structured organization and planning. A medical assistant (MFA) in urology benefits from their in-depth knowledge of diagnostic processes. They can realistically estimate the time and material requirements of individual procedures and ensure that examinations are carried out efficiently. They also monitor stocks of consumables, information sheets for scheduled examinations, and general office requirements.

Diagnostic measures

Although thephysicianbears primary responsibility for the proper performance of diagnostic procedures, many examinations can be delegated to MFAs. A specially trained MFA in urology learns the most important procedures during their training. This allows them to often perform these procedures independently or assist in their later work without extensive instruction. Monitoring patients after examinations is also one of the MFA’s core responsibilities.

With her knowledge, the MFA in urology can assess many examination results and thus identify early on whether urgent action is required. She knows when follow-up examinations are due and informs patients about general questions that don’t necessarily require a consultation. This relieves the burden on the physician and contributes to optimal patient care.

Special urological functional diagnostics and therapy

The focus of urology is on the urinary system, especially theureters, bladder, andurethra, and on the examination of and diseases of the male reproductive organs, such asthe penis, testicles, prostate, and other glands. Thekidneyoften plays a special role. It is the excretoryorganthat producesurine, but also produces a whole range ofhormonesand, among other things, significantly influences thecardiovascular system. This is why nephrology exists as a separate specialty that deals with the kidneys and partially overlaps with urology.

The MFA in urology can assist in certain specific urological procedures or even perform some of the procedures themselves. These include, among others, endoscopy of theurinary tractfor diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, the collection of tissue samples, and the insertion or replacement of urinary catheters through the urethra or through an abdominal approach. Surgical procedures include, for example, the treatment of inguinal hernias and the removal of the foreskin of thepenis.

MFA Urology – Requirements

Before applying to become a Urology MFA, applicants must first acquire basic general knowledge and skills. Therefore, the training requires completion of the medical assistant examination or, alternatively, a physician’sassistant examination. Alternatively, a comparable medical profession with a passed professional examination may be suitable. Furthermore, at least two years of experience in a urological specialty, either in a hospital or in a urology practice, is required.

MFA Urology – Training

The training to become a MFA in Urology focuses on the field of urology. It builds on the general MFA vocational training offered in many medical practices and should not be confused with it. Even in a urology practice, a clear distinction must be made between the general MFA and the MFA in Urology as training objectives.

The practical course is divided into a total of 100 teaching units of theory and practice, plus an exercise section. The topics are divided into modules. The blocks on clinical pictures and key symptoms, urological diagnostics, urological oncology, and palliative medicine comprise approximately one-third of the entire training. A further 16 hours are devoted to communication and interviewing skills, as well as perception and motivation.

The course covers medication administration, urinary diversion, medical device management, andwound managementin a total of 20 hours. Approximately a quarter of the training focuses on the reprocessing of medical devices, for which the relevant expertise is also required. This reflects the fact that urology, originally a surgical subspecialty, is a field in which internal examinations of the body are frequently performed. Participants acquire skills in organization, documentation, and quality assurance in a further, short module.

Graduates deepen their acquired knowledge in 15 practical units, during which they perform diagnostic testing procedures in urology in a relevant specialized practice or department. Importantly, the practical components cannot take place at the participants’ regular workplace.

The training concludes with a written exam. Upon passing, graduates receive a training certificate.

MFA Urology – Further training opportunities

Urology MFAs are highly qualified professionals who already have a wide range of job opportunities. Individual advanced training courses in topics such as billing, patient education, or specialized examination techniques expand their skills and offer the opportunity to individually refine their skills and preferences.

Academic careers following training are also possible. These range fromphysician assistance, a newer medical profession that offers graduates significant practical skills, to business studies, medical informatics, or even medical school. In some cases, the training period can be credited toward your degree program.
